This year the project is being expanded to use some sixth grade teachers and serve 60 Dogan students about 45 minutes after school, according to Shamsi Deen, the principal.

of the challenges we had with our students is them being able to understand the vocabulary across math, reading, science and social studies, he said. this program does is expose the student to a set of vocabulary words on a weekly basis and then they use those words in each of those four subjects. tutoring helps reinforce a broader understanding of those words, what they mean and how they can be used in different contexts, Shamsi Deen said.

He added, year we received a lot of positive results with the initial program. We saw that among the students we identified that they performed better and were able to develop their reading fluency cause they expanded their vocabulary. principal said the UT Tyler professors have worked to provide additional training to Dogan teachers and input to help them be successful. are looking forward to continuing the partnership, he said.

UT Tyler is working on another expansion of the literacy program this fall to Jones Elementary and Dixie Elementary, with approximately 30 students involved at each site.

The keys to the program success, Mokhtari said, are that UT Tyler is using what research says works, it has well trained tutors to present high quality teaching and it constantly monitors the program.
